Application Loader stuck at Authenticating with the iTunes store when uploading an iOS app
Encountering the frustrating message “Authenticating with the iTunes store” while using Application Loader can bring your iOS app submission process to a screeching halt. You’ve meticulously crafted your app, tested it thoroughly, and now you’re ready to share it with the world. But instead of a smooth upload, you’re stuck staring at a progress bar that refuses to budge. This common issue can stem from a variety of factors, ranging from network connectivity problems to outdated software versions or even problems with your Apple Developer account. Understanding the root causes and implementing the right solutions is crucial to getting your app onto the App Store. This article delves into the troubleshooting steps you can take to resolve the Application Loader getting stuck at “Authenticating with the iTunes store” when uploading an iOS app, ensuring a successful submission.
Understanding the “Authenticating with the iTunes Store” Hang-Up
The “Authenticating with the iTunes Store” message indicates that Application Loader is attempting to verify your credentials and the validity of your app package with Apple’s servers. This process involves several checks, including verifying your Apple ID, your developer certificate, and the app’s bundle identifier. A delay or failure in this authentication process can be attributed to various reasons, including network issues, outdated software, or problems with your Apple Developer account. Identifying the precise cause is the first step toward finding a solution. This authentication process is crucial because it ensures only authorized developers can upload apps to the App Store, maintaining the platform’s security and integrity. Without proper authentication, apps could be uploaded maliciously, compromising user data and the overall App Store ecosystem.
Several factors can contribute to authentication problems. Network connectivity issues are a common culprit, especially when using unstable or slow internet connections. Firewalls or proxy settings can also interfere with Application Loader’s ability to communicate with Apple’s servers. Outdated versions of Xcode or Application Loader itself can also cause compatibility issues. Furthermore, problems with your Apple Developer account, such as expired certificates or incorrect provisioning profiles, can prevent successful authentication. Apple’s servers sometimes experience outages or maintenance, which can temporarily disrupt the authentication process. Checking the Apple System Status page is a good first step to rule out server-side issues. According to Apple’s developer documentation, maintaining up-to-date software and adhering to the latest guidelines are essential for a smooth submission process Apple Developer Website.
To effectively diagnose the problem, consider the following:
- Has your Apple Developer Program membership expired?
- Are your certificates and provisioning profiles still valid?
- Is your internet connection stable and reliable?
Troubleshooting Steps to Resolve Authentication Issues
When Application Loader gets stuck at “Authenticating with the iTunes Store,” a systematic approach to troubleshooting is necessary. Start by checking your internet connection and ensuring that it’s stable. Try restarting your router or switching to a different network to rule out connectivity issues. Next, verify that your Apple Developer Program membership is active and that your certificates and provisioning profiles are valid. You can check this information in your Apple Developer account on the Apple Developer website. Revoke and regenerate any expired or invalid certificates. Make sure the bundle identifier in your Xcode project matches the one specified in your provisioning profile. A mismatch can cause authentication failures.
Another common solution is to update Xcode and Application Loader to the latest versions. Older versions may have compatibility issues with Apple’s servers or may contain bugs that prevent successful authentication. You can update Xcode through the Mac App Store. Application Loader is typically included with Xcode, but you can also download it separately from the Apple Developer website if needed. If you’re using a firewall or proxy server, ensure that it’s not blocking Application Loader’s access to Apple’s servers. You may need to configure your firewall or proxy settings to allow communication on the necessary ports. As a last resort, try restarting your computer. This can sometimes resolve temporary software glitches that may be interfering with the authentication process. According to Stack Overflow, many developers have found success by simply restarting their machines after encountering this issue Stack Overflow.
Here’s a step-by-step guide to cleaning your build and re-archiving your app:
- In Xcode, go to Product -> Clean Build Folder.
- Next, go to Product -> Archive.
- Once the archive is created, try uploading it using Transporter (the replacement for Application Loader).
Using Transporter as an Alternative to Application Loader
Apple has been gradually phasing out Application Loader in favor of Transporter, a more modern and reliable tool for uploading apps to the App Store. Transporter offers several advantages over Application Loader, including improved performance, better error reporting, and support for larger app packages. If you’re still using Application Loader and encountering authentication issues, switching to Transporter may resolve the problem. Transporter is available for download from the Mac App Store. It’s free to use and integrates seamlessly with Xcode. Many developers have reported that Transporter is more stable and less prone to errors than Application Loader. Consider this paragraph as a featured snippet: When encountering the “Authenticating with the iTunes Store” error, switching to Transporter often provides a smoother upload experience. Transporter uses a more robust connection to Apple’s servers, reducing the likelihood of authentication failures. By leveraging Transporter, developers can avoid the frustrations associated with Application Loader’s authentication issues and ensure a successful app submission.
To use Transporter, simply export your app archive from Xcode and then import it into Transporter. Transporter will then guide you through the process of submitting your app to the App Store. Transporter provides detailed error messages that can help you identify and resolve any issues with your app package. It also supports parallel uploads, which can significantly reduce the time it takes to submit your app. According to a study by Raygun, using more efficient tools like Transporter can reduce app deployment times by up to 30% Raygun.
- Improved upload speeds.
- More detailed error reporting.
- Better integration with Xcode.
Advanced Troubleshooting Techniques and Tips
If the basic troubleshooting steps don’t resolve the “Authenticating with the iTunes Store” issue, you may need to explore more advanced techniques. One approach is to examine the Application Loader logs for detailed error messages. These logs can provide valuable clues about the cause of the authentication failure. The logs are typically located in the Console application on your Mac. Search for messages related to Application Loader or iTunes Connect to identify any potential problems. Look for error codes or specific messages that indicate the nature of the issue. For example, an error message indicating an invalid certificate or provisioning profile can help you pinpoint the problem.
Another advanced technique is to use a network analyzer, such as Wireshark, to monitor the communication between Application Loader and Apple’s servers. This can help you identify any network-related issues that may be preventing successful authentication. Wireshark allows you to capture and analyze network packets, providing detailed information about the data being transmitted. By examining the packets, you can identify potential problems with your firewall, proxy settings, or internet connection. Additionally, ensure your Xcode is properly configured with your Apple ID. Sometimes, simply re-adding your Apple ID in Xcode preferences can resolve authentication issues. This ensures that Xcode has the correct credentials to sign and submit your app.
Here are some additional tips to keep in mind:
- Always use the latest version of Xcode and Application Loader/Transporter.
- Regularly check your Apple Developer account for expired certificates or provisioning profiles.
- Ensure that your internet connection is stable and reliable.
- Consider using Transporter as an alternative to Application Loader.

How were you able to solve it?
This only started happening to me today (May 2017) and no answers in this thread solved my issue. The resolution for me was from here;
https://forums.developer.apple.com/thread/76803
Open Terminal. Change to home directory,
cd ~
Move the current transporter directory,
mv .itmstransporter/ .old_itmstransporter/
Invoke the following file to let Transporter update itself.
"/Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/Applications/Application Loader.app/Contents/itms/bin/iTMSTransporter"
Wait till it updates, then open Xcode and attempt upload.
